Xuan Xiang Yi Qi "玄香异气"

Description:

Xuan Xiang Yi Qi (玄香异气) is a digital performance performing inside of series silk-screens’ in the physical space. There is a 2 by 1 meters long table inside of the space. A small teapot and five cups, and professional coffee machine are settled on the table. Artist LinZhang, as a performer performing inside of the space making tea and coffee. Programming video behind-projected on the silk-screens. With video played (ten-minute), performer start to boil the fresh water, put tea to kungfu machine, put coffee to coffee-maker. Artist attached the amplifier to the bottom of each machine and all the process will be recorded, sound samplified by the amplifiers. The procedures of kungfu-tea making is extremely slow and peaceful. In contract, the process of making coffee is simple but strong.

Xuan Xiang Yi Qi combines human’s five senses, the eyes, the ears, the tongue, the nose, and the skin performing in a live performance at the same time. Driven by curiosity, artist created an art practice to explore synesthesia . It is seldom to see an art performance concerned with all the human senses organs at the same time: who hear odors hear tastes, taste sounds, feel sounds on their skin. During the whole process of play, viewers perceive visualizations when tasting drinks, while other viewers hear sounds from tasting drinks, while others hear sounds from the smell of pu-erh tea and coffee beans. Instead of using traditional angle viewing tea and coffee, taking another point of view instead. They are no stereotypes of east and west, they are two different spices liquid, drink of smell. From this perspective, this project simple presented the concept of old wine in new bottles.
