Biography:
Lin is a Chinese artist who uses a
variety of media, including painting, photography and video. She graduated from
China Central Academy of Fine Arts (CAFA), the most well known Art School in
China, majoring in Painting & Media Arts. During her undergraduate studies,
her works focus on the changes experienced by Chinese women; private space is becomes
public. One of her digital media Installations named Present 00:00 won the Award of the Best Creative Art Works, 2007 Graduation Art
Exhibition, CAFA School of Design.
She started painting when she was four,
winning her first award when she was eight. This was followed by many others,
including the Prize of Gold, 1st International Children’s Painting Competition,
London UK, sponsored by Bloomsbury College, in 1993 when she was Eleven. Since the
age of twelve, she had been an apprentice of Professor Di'an Fan, former Vice
President of CAFA, and now the President of China National Gallery.
Since 2008, she has been studying the
interdisciplinary environment in the Department of Digital+Media, Rhode Island School of Design (RISD),
Lin creates never-ending loop installations in the new media genre, creating
new works within the context of interactive contemporary everyday existence;
the use of new computer technologies in gallery spaces via animated video; and
also in digital performances, she explores the meanings between human actions and
digital projections by using sounds, lights, videos and images. Lin draws from
her experiences living throughout China,
Canada and the United States.
Since 2010, LinZhang and Feng Jiangzhou became an artist group called
Sifenlv, created and produced<
Artist Statement:
I revere the ancient Chinese traditions and incorporate them into my work while reflecting on succeeding generations: my life as an artist follows a cycle that goes from studying the ancient paintings; to studying digital + media, and moving beyond new media to digital performance.
My Self-Portraits series focuses on issues specific to women artists and their respective
generations. Across the Mountains, a work from this series, translates
this traditional format into a new media installation as I design myself as a
robot that travels with portraits of my family; Blinks in the Atmosphere projects on the Cave wall1 is based on a Zen (Chinese: 禪 Chan) parable or koan (Chinese: 公案 gong'an); Xuan Xiang Yi Qi, a digital performance,
creates a sense of connection between the inner and outer spaces, engages the
five sensing organs, provoking synesthetic experiences. Endless appropriates and animates the ancient Chinese illustrated book, and questions
the assumption that the environment will always adapt to the effects of the
presence of humans; Shan Xuan Shui Cang uses a variation of Chinese Landscapes within digital
contemporary time: disturbing the visual surface of the landscape versus
disturbing the ideology of narratives; and the Micro-Landscape Series makes different shapes and materials and considers how the meaning shifts
within the narratives. The social public digital performances Floating City,
Fleeting Life and Reading-Mistake project
images and animate videos; program videos use advanced soft wares, multiple
stage technologies and dancers to present aspects of electronic everyday life
and express the live-status of people who are living under urban cities.
